RELEASE: Rep. Lesch discusses 14th Amendment at Washington Tech Magnet debate class

Tuesday, January 31, 2017

St. Paul, Minn. – Thursday afternoon, state Rep. John Lesch (DFL – St. Paul) spoke to Ms. Sarah Wellington's debate class of 9th and 10th graders at Washington Technology Magnet School in St. Paul. Rep. Lesch’s mini-lecture focused on the history of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United State Constitution, and why it’s important for all Americans to have the right to trial by jury.

“I was extremely impressed with how engaging these students were, and they asked plenty of great questions,” Rep. Lesch said. “I provided background on the Magna Carta, the Batson v. Kentucky case, and other historical context to better their understanding of how crucial it is that as Americans, when accused of a crime, we’re entitled to a jury of our peers who know what we’re going through, and who can identify with our situation.”

As a defense attorney outside of the Legislature, Rep. Lesch’s visit was valuable to students as they prepare to enter the Law Day Essay Contest. Law Day is held on May 1st every year to celebrate the role of law in our society, and to cultivate a deeper understanding of the legal profession. The Fourteenth Amendment is the theme of this year’s Law Day to explore the many ways it has reshaped the American legal system and influenced society.

Rep. Lesch is the lead DFL member of the House Civil Law and Data Practices Committee. He represents the Como Park, North End, East Side and Hamline-Midway neighborhoods in St. Paul at the Capitol.
