$14.5 Million will fund updated seals and sea lions exhibit

ST. PAUL, MN – On Tuesday morning Governor Mark Dayton released his list of recommendations for 2015 bonding projects.  Included in his list of recommendations was $14.5 million for the Sparky seal and sea lion exhibit at Como Zoo in St. Paul.  The Como Zoo, a Minnesota cultural treasure, is represented by State Rep. John Lesch (DFL – St. Paul).

"I am excited to see Governor Dayton's priority for the seals and sea lions at Como Zoo," said Representative Lesch, "The ‘Sparky [the Sea Lion] Show’ is an institution at Como, and Minnesota families have enjoyed the exhibit for 58 years. This project is an important part of our community and the cultural heritage of Minnesota."

The Governor recommends $14.5 million for a grant to the city of St. Paul to plan, design and construct the renewal of the seals and sea lions exhibit at Como Zoo. The new exhibit will provide year-round use that meets or exceeds all regulatory and collection management requirements. The Governor's recommendations are important for the funding's passage, but the proposal must remain a priority in the final House and Senate versions of the bonding bill.

The Sparky Show runs daily throughout the summer months beginning Saturday, May 24th at 11:30am with an additional show at 3:00pm on weekends and holidays.

Rep. John Lesch encourages constituents to contact him on any issue.  He can be reached by email at rep.john.lesch@house.mn or phone at 651-296-4224.
