ATKINS RELEASES DAILY FANTASY SPORTS LEGISLATION, PROPOSES NATIONAL MODEL

Wednesday, December 9, 2015

SAINT PAUL, MN – Today, State Rep. Joe Atkins (DFL-Inver Grove Heights) released model legislation on daily fantasy sports betting. He released the proposed legislation ahead of the annual Capitol Forum meeting of the bipartisan, 50-state National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Washington D.C. The Capitol Forum agenda includes a debate with Rep. Atkins on the multi-billion-dollar daily fantasy sports (DFS) betting industry.

Assembly Member Maggie Carlton from Nevada, where DFS has been shut down as illegal gambling, will be arguing against legalization. Atkins will be arguing for legalization and the continuation of DFS, with appropriate oversight by the Department of Public Safety. The panel will be moderated by NCSL President Curt Bramble of Utah. Draft Kings and Fan Duel will also have a representative on the panel.

NCSL seeks to craft model legislation for all 50 states. For Atkins proposal to be adopted as model legislation at NCSL, it must gain the support of 75% of states.

Rep. Joe Atkins is the DFL Minority lead on the Commerce and Regulatory Reform Committee and former Chair of the Commerce and Consumer Protection Finance and Policy Committee.
