Dear Neighbors,
This morning I joined a group of state and federal elected officials and many community leaders to bring attention to the immediate need for increased rescue and relief efforts on the US Territory of Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Our district is home to many Puerto Rican families with long-time roots in the West Side neighborhood, and I am asking for your help to help the people of Puerto Rico.
I can't overstate the scope of damage and danger that 3.5 million Boricuas (our indigenous name) face on the island as a result of Hurricane Maria. Time is of the essence to avoid a massive humanitarian crisis. No electricity - none, save diesel fueled generators - no running water, very little food and 90 degree heat and humidity every day under a scorching sun. Homes destroyed. The economy is in standstill.
State Sen. Melisa Franzen and I are pushing our federal officials to pass a massive federal government aid package for the island. We were pleased to be joined today by Congressman Keith Ellison, Congressman Tim Walz, Mayor Chris Coleman, and our Congresswoman Betty McCollum also sent staff to show her support, but our neighbors in Puerto Rico also need immediate help to survive.
As individual givers, we can do so much that will make a difference in life and death. I would ask you to get involved or give to an aid organization today if you are able.
As the courageous San Juan Mayor - Carmen Yulin Cruz - who is literally wading in waist high waters to find her vulnerable city residents – said, "We are dying - We need your help.”

Nationally:
Americares is seeking contributions for Hurricane Maria relief in their Hurricane Disaster Relief Fund to provide medicines & hope to people in crisis.
