Legislative Update: June Special Session

Saturday, June 19, 2021

Neighbors and Friends,

Last month, House and Senate leaders outlined a framework to complete the two-year budget. Since the legislature adjourned on May 17, we have continued our work to finalize bipartisan agreements aimed at ending this special session quickly while funding priorities Minnesotans care about.

It is disappointing the House Minority is purposely delaying votes on several bipartisan budget bills, thus halting our forward progress to pass a two-year state budget. However, with bipartisan agreements reached, we will finish the session in time to avoid a shutdown.

A bright spot during this discordant time, is a bipartisan agreement on the eviction moratorium off-ramp – part of the broad Housing measure – which offers strong protections for renters and specific timelines for landlords. As chair of the Housing Finance and Policy Committee, I am pleased we have also reached an agreement with the Senate on the entire Housing budget. The measure passed out of the Ways and Means committee on Friday and is headed to the House floor for a full vote as early as Monday. On Monday morning, we will hold an informational hearing you can watch here. Our goal is to help those most affected by COVID-19.

COVID-19 Vaccination Update

The best way to protect everyone from COVID-19 is to get a vaccine. The Minnesota Department of Health reports more than 3 million Minnesotans have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Check out Minnesota’s COVID-19 mn.gov/vaccineconnector, or ask your health care provider to help you find a vaccine.

Water Safety

As many as nine water-related fatalities have been reported and a higher-than-average number of drownings have occurred in our state. You can read tips from the DNR on how to be safe around the water. Our Legacy Finance bill also includes funding to teach at-risk kids how to swim, a skill that could help save lives throughout Minnesota.
