Neighbors and Friends,

Thank you to everyone who attended our Town Hall meeting last Saturday. As usual, we had a packed room and attendees offered thoughts on a wide range of issues. I take your comments seriously and appreciate that you made time in your busy schedules for the meeting.

2020 Session Begins

The 2020 Legislative Session was gaveled in on Tuesday and it has been a busy first week. All legislators were invited to participate in the One Minnesota conference at the U of M to learn about policy issues and ways we can all work collaboratively to benefit all Minnesotans.

Next week, the Housing Policy and Finance Division, which I chair, will hold our first meeting of the session. We will be hearing the Homes for All agenda. I am the chief author of HF3326. Because of the short session and the early committee deadlines, our agendas will be packed to fit our bills in four hearings.

We also welcomed a new member to the caucus. Rep. Sydney Jordan won a special election earlier this month to fill a seat vacated by the death of our colleague and friend Diane Loeffler who represented the northeast and eastside of Minneapolis. Rep. Loeffler’s impact will be lasting. She was remembered on the House floor with heartfelt tributes

Government Accountability and Transparency

On Tuesday, I attended a gathering of several government accountability groups in the Capitol Rotunda. Move to Amend, Fair Vote Minnesota and others, invited legislators to learn about the coalition of individuals who are committed to social and economic justice.

Presidential primary voter privacy bill

Last week, Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon introduced the Presidential Primary Voter Privacy Bill (HF3068) to focus on voter privacy concerns connected to Minnesota’s March 3rd Presidential Nomination Primary. I am supporting the measure, which aims to restrict sharing of political party identification data to specific representatives and therefore protect the voter from having their party preference shared widely. You can read the Secretary of State’s news release here.
