Legislative Update - December 20, 2019 Insulin hearing, Subcommitte on Legislative Process Reform, wage theft, presidential primary

Friday, December 20, 2019

Neighbors and Friends,

The next few weeks will be full of activity as we celebrate the season with family and friends. The holidays are such a great time of year to connect with those who mean the most to us. Here is an update from the Capitol:

Insulin hearing

On Wednesday, members of the House insulin working group held a public meeting on the status of insulin affordability legislation. House Speaker Melissa Hortman directed the House members of the work group to report on the status of their efforts after 60 days. December 18th marked 60 days since the insulin work group was formed. Legislators provided an update on the working group and heard public testimony. Senate members of the working group also participated in the meeting, which you can watch here.

The Subcommittee on Legislative Process Reform met this week to discuss policies and procedures aimed to make the legislative process more efficient. If you are interested in the mechanics of the legislature, I think you would find these meetings very interesting. You can watch Wednesday’s hearing by clicking on this link.

Wage theft

On July 1, one of the toughest wage theft laws in the country went into effect in Minnesota. MPR recently broadcast a news segment on the measure, which creates additional protections for workers that include criminal penalties for employers when they don’t pay their workers what is owed them for the work they have performed. The law also includes funding to allow the Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI) to add staff for enforcement and conduct outreach and education for employers, workers and their communities.

Presidential primary

In 2020, for the first time, Minnesotans will select their preferred presidential candidate among the major parties in a primary election. Early voting begins January 17.The Minnesota Secretary of State has created a primary fact sheet to help you learn about the process.
