Legislative update - December 13, 2019

Friday, December 13, 2019

Neighbors and Friends,

Minnesota youth are taking to the streets…and the Capitol, continuing their drumbeat to save the planet. Last Friday, they gathered in St. Paul for the Youth Climate Strike to coincide with similar events happening around the world. The Friday event followed a September event which was attended by hundreds of all generations.

I am a member of the Minnesota Climate Action Caucus, a group of lawmakers committed to finding legislative solutions to climate change. Our caucus has held a number of hearings, with more scheduled in 2020. Also, just this week, the Minnesota Senate formed their own caucus to promote clean energy in Minnesota and combat climate change. And as mentioned in my last update, Gov. Walz established the Climate Change Subcabinet and the Governor’s Advisory Council on Climate Change to guide the administration in the “pursuit of bold and collaborative action to combat climate change.”

We take seriously the efforts of our youth and aim to pass significant legislation to address the climate crisis.

Liam Magistad from Macalester College interned in my office during the last legislative session.  He wrote this poem to capture the energy of last Friday’s event.

A Rumbling in the Halls of Power

The students, they know
They have learned much
They know of the halls of power

The strike has been called
The feet have marched
They march to the halls of power

The young have arrived
Many feet still small
They walk in the halls of power

Their voices are legion
Their message is clear
They speak in the halls of power

They have a demand
They come for their future
They plead with the halls of power

They know of the need
They preach the truth
Truth to the halls of power

They need to fight
And all must strive
To shake the halls of power

Our moment is here
Our will is steel
We challenge the halls of power

We will persist
It’s ours to claim
We hold the halls of power

The will of the young
The will of the future
The future of the halls of power

We are the students
We are the strikers
We are the marchers
We are the young
We are the future

This is our planet and we cherish it
