Legislative Update - February 20, 2019

Wednesday, February 20, 2019

Neighbors and Friends,

In the last week I have had many visitors stop by my office, weighing in on various issues and concerns. I hope you will make your way to the Capitol this session, sit in on either a committee or floor session and stop by to say hello. Here is the latest from the Capitol:

Governor Walz released his first budget yesterday, and it demonstrates his commitment to Minnesotans. Over the next few days, I will review the governor’s proposals. I am confident that the governor, House and Senate can work together to craft a budget that strengthens our schools, makes affordable health care a reality and increases economic opportunity for everyone.

As chair of the Housing Finance & Policy Division, we are examining the root causes of homelessness, the statewide housing shortage and other factors related to the housing crisis. This article appeared in the Star Tribune over the weekend and covers the lack of available apartments in the Twin Cities.

A noteworthy opinion piece was included in Monday’s Star Tribune. This Counterpoint responds to an earlier article about the effects of fees on overall building costs.

The housing predicament is multifaceted and complex. There are no easy answers and this crisis has been ongoing for years. I’m hopeful that our committee can address and make some progress on this difficult issue.
