Update: State employee contracts, The work ahead, tax preparation tips

Wednesday, April 11, 2018

Neighbors and Friends,

We have returned to the Capitol from the Easter/Passover break. We certainly have a full plate to accomplish in the next seven weeks before the May 21st adjournment date. Here is an update:

State Employee Contracts/Pensions

Before our break, the Legislature passed public employee contracts and sent them to Governor Dayton for his signature. The contracts for our public employees were negotiated in 2017 and it was time they were ratified.

The Senate approved a pension bill, providing a $6 billion reduction in current and future costs by lowering state, school district, county, and city liabilities, but the bill is stalled in the House. Approval of this pension bill is critical to our state and to the financial future of 500,000 former state employees.

The Work Ahead

We have many busy weeks ahead to finish our legislative work. Among the unresolved issues are tax conformity, gun safety, elder abuse, opioids, pensions and transportation. As the Capital Investment DFL lead, I’m also advocating for a robust bonding bill to fix our crumbling wastewater infrastructure, provide badly needed repairs to deteriorating college campus buildings and continue to address the affordable housing shortage.

Tax Preparation Tips

The income tax filing season ends on April 17 this year, and the Minnesota Department of Revenue is offering tips as you get ready to file your returns:

E-file and choose direct deposit. Electronically filing your return and choosing direct deposit for your refund is the most secure and convenient way to file your taxes and get your refund. Double-check bank routing and account numbers used on tax forms for direct deposit.

Enter all names exactly as they appear on Social Security cards. Incorrect names or Social Security numbers will result in refund delays.

File your return by April 17 even if you owe more than you can pay. Pay as much as you can by the due date to minimize any late filing or late payment penalties that may apply.

As always, contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
