Legislative E-Update

Friday, March 9, 2018

Neighbors and Friends,

As the third week of the legislative session concludes, the pace is picking up. Again this week we were busy with visits from many groups meeting with legislators to discuss their concerns and issues.

Visitors to the Capitol

Among others, advocates for the Arts came to the Capitol to discuss the need for continued funding. Those working to end homelessness in our state also spent a day at the Capitol, urging lawmakers to provide funding for safe and affordable housing.

Almanac at the Capitol

Homelessness for Veterans and others is still a problem – but we are making progress. On Wednesday, I appeared on Almanac at the Capitol with Sen. Jim Abeler to discuss the issue.

Ending Senseless Gun Violence

This was another week where gun violence was at the center of discussion. Last week, two gun safety bills were heard, but tabled in committee – meaning no action was taken.  This week, two DFL legislators announced a bill that prohibits those under age 21 from possessing or purchasing a semiautomatic military-style assault weapon.

Community safety advocates are simply asking for widely supported actions such as background checks and measures that would help law enforcement and family members to keep guns out of the hands of people who pose a danger to themselves or others.

I will continue to monitor and push for any measure that keeps all of our residents safe.

Budget

Minnesota Management and Budget recently announced a modest $329 million surplus. As we’ve seen, there is instability in the national economy and, although our state economy is relatively stable, we want to use caution but also continue to support investments for all Minnesotans.

As always, contact me with any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

Alice
