RELEASE: State Rep. Jim Davnie Statement on Supplemental Education Omnibus

Thursday, April 26, 2018

SAINT PAUL, MINN — Today the Minnesota House passed a Republican supplemental education finance package. House DFL Representatives noted the inadequate provisions in many portions of the bill. State Rep. Jim Davnie (DFL-Minneapolis), House DFL Lead on the Education Finance Committee, released the following statement:

“All over the country, teachers, parents and students are loudly telling lawmakers that they’ve had enough of disinvestment in our public schools. They’re also protesting the fact that we’re not doing anything to prevent senseless gun violence. The bill we passed today is just one more example of having the capacity to do more, but choosing to do less. Minnesotans all place a high value on the education of our children, because it’s the foundation of our future success. This bill is disappointing for what is not in it. This bill lacks necessary state funding for mandated services, and that is already leading to cuts in districts throughout the state. Much like the bill Republicans passed last year that didn’t keep pace with the cost of inflation, this bill is all but certain to lead to the weakening of the education Minnesota kids are getting in our schools.

“Minnesotans have long supported strong public schools, and we need to make stronger investments to help our kids grow and learn in the future.”
