RELEASE: Rep. Jim Davnie Calls ‘Bde Maka Ska’ Name Change Approval Historic

Thursday, January 18, 2018

SAINT PAUL, MN – State Rep. Jim Davnie (DFL – Minneapolis) says the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources decision today to approve the change of the name of Minneapolis’ Lake Calhoun to the original Dakota language name, Bde Maka Ska, is historic.

“The name change represents a significant acknowledgement of our history as a city, county and state,” said Rep. Davnie “Restoring the name Bde Maka Ska will start conversations and educational experiences about our history and the first Indigenous people of Minnesota. The Department of Natural Resources did the right thing, and they have helped us grow a deeper appreciation for the vibrant Native American Indian communities that still exist in Minneapolis and throughout the state. We can all be proud of this decision.”
