Legislative Update - February 16, 2017

Thursday, February 16, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

As the month of February moves quickly along, here are a few updates from the legislature.

Legislative Leaders Discuss the Issues at Twin West

Recently, the four leaders of the State House and Senate caucuses discussed issues at the Twin West Chamber Legislative Breakfast. They discussed a wide range of issues, including transportation and transit funding, passing a Real ID law this year, making changes to labor standards in local communities, and changes to our healthcare and health insurance system. The Sun Post provided a summary of the discussion in their story linked here.

Recognition for Legislative Service

At the beginning of the legislative session in January I was honored by my colleagues for being the longest serving Representative in the history of the Minnesota Legislature. My colleague Rep. Mike Freiberg made special remarks on the House floor and I was asked to speak on my time serving our district. If you’d like to watch the short video you can see it here.

Hennepin Gallery Voting Rights Exhibit

As we acknowledge major contributions of African Americans throughout American history during Black History Month, one important contribution to our Nation were the landmark civil rights bills passed during the 1960’s. If you enjoy learning about the history of this era as much as I do, there is an excellent exhibit on the 1965 Voting Rights Act now on display at the Hennepin County Government Center, featuring how the Voting Rights Act impacted Minnesotans. The free exhibit runs through February 27th at the Hennepin Gallery (located in the A-Level of the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis MN 55487) open to the public from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, Monday-Friday. For more info call Carolyn Marinan at 612-348-5969.
