Legislative Update- August 29, 2019

Thursday, August 29, 2019

Dear Neighbors,

A big thank you to all who turned out for the community conversation I held earlier this month with Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. We had a wonderful and engaging dialogue. Having the opportunity to see and hear from you in person is helpful and rewarding.

Back-to-School

Back-to-school season is here. Minnesotans value high-quality schools for their own children, and want the same for their neighbors, relatives, and friends, too. We care about one another, and want to see each other succeed -- especially our youngest learners. I am proud to have authored the new law that protects voluntary pre-k opportunities for 4,000 preschoolers in our community and around the state.

This year, state lawmakers passed a budget that makes new investments in every student in every public school -- because that’s what Minnesotans asked us to do. There is more work to do to support a world-class education for every child. I’ll continue to advocate for our students as we look to the 2020 session.

I would also like to wish first-time or returning college and vocational students the best as they embark on their post-secondary path. As the Chair of the House Higher Education Finance and Policy Division, I worked with my House and Senate colleagues to prioritize additional scholarship and grant opportunities to help address the affordability barriers Minnesota students and families face. I look forward to continuing these efforts when the legislative session reconvenes in February.

Celebrating Women’s Equality Day

Women’s Equality Day on August 26 marks the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote in the United States after decades of organizing and advocacy. This year marks the 99th anniversary of the suffrage movement’s success. You can learn more about the women who inspired this important day of recognition by reading this Time Magazine story

In Minnesota, we’re fortunate to have many incredible women serving in public office at the local, state, and federal levels. Here at the Legislature, my colleagues and I passed legislation to keep the movement for equality going strong. For example, House Democrats approved a bill to let Minnesotans vote on adding the Equal Rights Amendment to our state constitution. Although the Senate blocked Minnesotans from getting to make this choice, I refuse to give up until gender equality becomes the law of the land in our state.
