LETTER: Investing in Early Childhood Education

Tuesday, June 25, 2019

To the Editor:

Working collaboratively to advance our values at the Capitol, we delivered a two-year state budget in one of the only divided legislatures in our country. While compromise meant both sides didn’t get to pass every policy they wanted, House Democrats held firm to ensure the quality of education for our youngest learners wasn’t jeopardized.

The historic investments we made in students and schools is a result of the parents, families and teachers who came from all over to share with lawmakers the value of a world-class education.

I have been and continue to be a strong advocate for education, including early childhood education, because every child deserves a great start in life. This year when Senate Republicans threatened to eliminate access to pre-K for 4,000 of Minnesota’s youngest learners, I championed the legislation to protect them.

An investment in early childhood education is an investment in our future. Gov. Tim Walz signed the bill into law last week. With your support and advocacy, our communities’ school districts will receive about $1 million to secure voluntary pre-K opportunities for our residents.

This year, Democrats brought Minnesotans’ values to the Capitol. We established a vision to build a state that works better for everyone. There’s more work ahead as we look toward 2020. I encourage you to reach out with your input and questions at 651-296-5510 or rep.connie.bernardy@house.mn. I enjoy hearing from you!
