Legislative Update- State Budget News from the Capitol

Monday, May 20, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

Yesterday evening, legislative leaders in the House and Senate announced a bipartisan, bicameral state budget agreement. The compromise makes progress to improve public education, health care, and economic security for Minnesotans.

Here’s a few highlights of the compromise budget framework:
  • Increased investments in each student by 2 percent over the next 2 years. This will help ensure students across the state have the same access to quality education.
  • Prevented cuts to health care, protecting health care access for 1.2 million Minnesotans. You can read my recent letter to the editor regarding this area of the budget here.
  • Approved a .25% income tax cut for the middle class.
You can read more from our nonpartisan office of House Public Information here.

Details of the budget are being finalized in committees and work groups, which will give the public a chance to weigh in. The schedule for these is available here. I'm glad that we are on track for an orderly end to the legislative session.

I’ll be sure to keep you updated as more components of the budget are finalized.

Thank you,

Connie Bernardy
