Legislative Update- March 13, 2019

Wednesday, March 13, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

We’re officially half way through the legislative session. Committees continue to meet and hold public hearings into the evening to ensure a timely adjournment on May 20.

Here’s an update from the Capitol:

Voluntary PreK

My bill to continue investments toward voluntary Prekindergarten programs received a public hearing this week. If enacted, my legislation would not only keep the program going, but it would allow more of our youngest learners the opportunity to participate. It was great to be joined by preK teachers who provided expert testimony on the benefits of this voluntary, educational program to help get our kids off to the best start.

Equal Rights Amendment

Recently, the Minnesota House discussed and passed a bill to place the following question on the 2020 General Election ballot: “Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide that equality under the law must not be abridged or denied on account of gender?” It’s a step forward in guaranteeing equality for women and ensuring fair treatment by the courts, employers, state and local governments, health care providers, and others. It represents Minnesota’s commitment to equality, and rejects discrimination based on gender. I was glad to support this long overdue legislation.

Reminder: Input Needed on University Avenue

I would like to invite you to an important conversation the City of Fridley and Minnesota Department of Transportation are holding to guide the future of University Avenue and Highway 65. Input is needed on the community's goals and priorities from a livability and transportation standpoint, aesthetics for our community, corridor design for businesses and more.

There are two more opportunities to share your thoughts and ideas on this important project. Here are the details:

  • March 21 at Fridley Civic Center from 6:00-8:00 p.m.
  • April 4 at Fridley Civic Center from 6:00-8:00 p.m.

I have been working closely with the Minnesota Department of Transportation and my legislative colleagues to increase safety through these corridors.

Stay in Touch

Please continue to reach out with any questions, comments or feedback on state matters. I appreciate hearing from you!

Thank you and have a great rest of the week,

Connie Bernardy
State Representative
