Legislative Update- March 5, 2019

Tuesday, March 5, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

It’s hard to believe February has come and gone. We’ve approached our ninth week at the Legislature. Here’s an update from St. Paul:

Gun Violence Prevention

Last week, the Public Safety and Criminal Justice Reform Division approved gun violence prevention legislation. HF 8, authored by Rep. Dave Pinto of St. Paul, expands criminal background checks to all gun sales. HF 9, authored by Rep. Ruth Richardson of Mendota Heights, creates a “red flag law” that would allow law enforcement officials to temporarily remove firearms from an individual’s possession if a judge determines that they are a danger to themselves or others.

Transportation Field Hearing in Blaine

On Friday, our House Transportation Finance and Policy Division held a public hearing in Blaine to discuss several local transportation projects. My bill was discussed, which would deliver one time funding for engineering evaluations and safety improvements for areas like ours who are experiencing safety issues.

Your Input Needed- Future Design of University Avenue

The City of Fridley and Minnesota Department of Transportation invite you to an important conversation to guide the future design of University Avenue and Highway 65. Input is needed on the community's goals and priorities from a livability and transportation standpoint, aesthetics for our community, corridor design for businesses and more. This will be a series of three workshops taking place at the Fridley Civic Center from 6-8 p.m. on March 7 and 21, and April 4. I hope you can attend to share your thoughts and ideas on this important project to help make our community safer.

Constituent Visits

It was wonderful to welcome and speak with students from our district and Girl Scouts from New Brighton. Both are bright, engaged groups with many good ideas for the future.

Keep in Touch

Please stay in touch with your questions, comments or any state related matter. I value your input and appreciate hearing from you!

Have a great week,

Connie Bernardy
State Representative
