Legislative Update- February 18, 2019

Monday, February 18, 2019
Dear Neighbors,

I hope you had a nice weekend. Committees are busy hearing several bipartisan proposals with a lot of compelling testimony from Minnesotans visiting the Capitol to advocate for various bills in which they are passionate. Understandably, not everyone is able to take time off to travel to St. Paul- which is why the DFL House Majority is holding a variety of official, public “field hearings” outside of the Capitol to allow more Minnesotans to participate in the law-making process and shape what their state government looks like.

On Friday morning, March 1, I’ll be joining my colleagues on the Transportation Finance & Policy Division to hold a public field hearing in Blaine. All members of the community are invited to attend, and the committee welcomes public testimony. Details are being finalized and I will share them with you as soon as I have the information.

Upcoming Town Hall Meeting

Join us Sat, Feb 23, 10:30-12:30 at the New Brighton Community Center. We will listen to what matters to you & share our Minnesota Values Plan we created from constituent input at my last listening session & others across Minnesota.

Increasing Safety for Bicyclists

On Thursday, my bill to increase safety for bicyclists passed in the House. HF 462 makes a number of changes related to riding rules, bicyclist duties and rules governing drivers when they intermingle with bicyclists. All Minnesotans deserve to be safe on the road, regardless of the mode of transportation they use. I was glad to get overwhelming support from my colleagues on both sides of the aisle.

Gun Violence Prevention

The Parkland, FL murders at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School occurred one year ago on February 14. A memorial took place that afternoon in the Capitol Rotunda, where members of the public, legislators, and advocates read the names of Minnesotans who have died at the hands of a firearm, whether through gun violence or suicide. The Star Tribune covered the memorial here.

Minnesotans expect us to do everything in our power to keep them safe at school, places of worship, movie theaters, restaurants, and other public places. That’s why the House DFL Majority is taking action to pass background checks on all firearms sales and transfers (HF 8), and extreme risk protection orders (HF9). Both bills are part of the Majority’s Minnesota Values Plan, which are the first 10 priority bills introduced this session based on months-long listening sessions with Minnesotans last year in their communities. Here is a photo of the press conference I participated in.
