RELEASE: MnDOT to work with community on possible Hwy 47 safety improvements

Friday, April 20, 2018

St. Paul, Minn. – Today, the Minnesota Department of Transportation committed to working with our communities on possible safety improvements on the Hwy. 47 corridor following an amendment offered by Rep. Connie Bernardy, DFL-Fridley, in the Transportation Finance Committee.

The amendment would have directed MnDOT to perform a safety study on the stretch of Hwy. 47 between 53rd Ave. and Hwy. 10. While the amendment was not adopted, it did elicit a commitment from MnDOT to look into safety improvements.

Rep. Connie Bernardy

“Safety needs to be our number one priority when it comes to transportation in our community and state. We need to do all we can to make our roadways and pathways – sidewalks, crosswalks, and trails – safe for people of all ages and abilities,” Bernardy said. “Hwy. 47 (University Ave.) is an important transportation corridor. I am pleased the Minnesota Department of Transportation made a public commitment to address the safety needs on University Ave.”

Rep. Erin Koegel

“Our transportation and transit systems are critical to the success of our communities so I’m encouraged that MnDOT is taking these concerns seriously,” Koegel said. “Thousands of members of our community rely on the roads and highways as they go about their day-to-day lives and we must do all we can to make these options as safe as possible for the drivers, transit users, and pedestrians who use them.”
