Legislative Update (March 6, 2015)

Friday, March 6, 2015

Friends,

We had several late nights at the Capitol this week as we debated bills that will impact you and our community. I’m proud of the work we have done!

Last night, we passed HF2 in the House. I know that many of you are concerned about the future of our schools, and I am confident that this bill ensures that our students will have the strongest teachers that support their right to a great education. HF2 permits school districts to develop teacher layoff policies that take into account more than seniority. This allows school districts the opportunity to guarantee that each classroom has an engaged, innovative teacher that is dedicated to the outcome of the students in their classrooms. Additionally, this bill widens the pool of prospective teachers by allowing community experts in important subjects the opportunity to receive licensure and teach in needed areas, as well as fast-tracking licensure for out-of-state teachers who wish to join our Minnesota school districts. These measures will ensure that Minnesota has a gold-standard education system for generations to come.

I was honored to be re-appointed to the Legislative Commission on Metropolitan Government by Speaker Daudt. Several of you have expressed your concerns with burdensome regulations and financial requirements brought about by the Met Council’s jurisdiction over our area. On the commission, I will have the opportunity to work with my colleagues to provide recommendations to the legislature on issues such as the Met Council’s property tax requests, the size and scope of their duties, and the performance of their programs. I look forward to continuing to serve on this oversight commission and finding ways to make the Met Council more accountable to you.

It was an honor to meet with constituents from our community this week. Some individual citizens stopped in, as well as a group of students and an administrator from PACT Charter School.

It was great to talk to our local newspaper about my desire for the budget surplus! Thank you to ABC Newspapers for speaking with me. You can read the article in your copy of the paper, or online here.

As always, please stay in touch to share your thoughts on these or any other legislative issues that impact you and your family. You can schedule an appointment to meet with me in my office by calling my Legislative Assistant, Alex Pouliot, at (651) 296-5813, or by emailing me directly at rep.peggy.scott@house.mn.

I am so thankful for the opportunity to serve as your voice in the House!
