News from Representative Wills 05-09-2014

Friday, May 9, 2014

Dear Friends,

We have just 10 days remaining in the 2014 legislative session! Can you believe it? There's still several outstanding bills left to be worked out, including a second tax cut bill that will be focused on property tax relief; a spending bill; and a bonding bill to fund various construction projects across the state.

There's expected to be bipartisan support for the tax cut bill and bonding bill. The bonding bill requires 60%, or 81 votes in order to pass, and I'm hoping to see full funding for the Minnesota Zoo's bonding request included in the final version that is likely to be voted on in the House next week.

As always, if you have any questions or comments as we finish up the last  10 days of session, please don't hesitate to contact me at rep.anna.wills@house.mn or by phone at 651-296-4306.

Here are some additional updates from this past week:

Survey Results
Thanks to everyone who participated in my 2014 legislative survey. I enjoyed reading your responses, and am grateful for the comments & feedback that helps me better represent our community. If you would like to see the results of the survey, please click here.

Teacher Appreciation Day
It's been a huge honor for me to serve on the Education Policy and Education Finance Committees during my first term. The best part has been the opportunity to meet the amazing teachers in District 196 and other parts of the state that work each and every day to educate our next generation of leaders. Tuesday, May 6, was National Teacher Appreciation Day, a chance for us to say thanks to the teachers that have had a positive influence on our lives.

Eagle Scout Court of Honor
Last Saturday, May 3, I was invited to attend the Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony for District 57B constituent Matthew Billings. Matthew organized and constructed 30 bluebird houses that were placed in three parks around Rosemount. Matthew is the 8th member of the Billings' extended family to reach the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations to Matthew and his family on this wonderful accomplishment, and all you do for our community.

Eastview Students Visit the Capitol
It was great to welcome students from Eastview High School who came to the Capitol as a part of their American Government & Citizenship class. I shared with them about my day-to-day work at the legislature, and how we as legislators learn about issues and weigh all of the information to try to make the best decisions on behalf of Minnesotans.

Mother's Day Weekend at the Zoo
To celebrate Mother's Day, the Minnesota Zoo is offering FREE admission Saturday and Sunday. If you're looking for a unique way to celebrate Mother's Day, the Zoo is a great place to bring your mom for a fun day trip. More information can be found on the Zoo's website by clicking here.

Happy Birthday Minnesota!
In addition to Mother's Day, Sunday is the 156th birthday of Minnesota's Statehood. On May 11, 1858, Minnesota officially became the 32nd state. To celebrate Minnesota's birthday, the State Capitol Historic Site has featured historical characters from 1857 presenting arguments for and against the future boundaries of the state to students visiting as a part of school groups. In addition, the chandelier in the Capitol rotunda will be lit today, May 9, and again on May 11.

Happy Mother's Day to all of the Moms!

Sincerely,

Anna Wills
