News from Representative Wills 06-14-2013

Friday, June 14, 2013

Dear Friends,

I hope you're enjoying your summer so far. I've been staying busy, getting out to as many community events as possible. I wanted to recap for you some of the local events I've been to, and let you know about opportunities coming up in our area in the coming weeks.

Cedar Closing Delayed
Due to heavy rains expected tonight, the county has decided to delay the closing of the intersection at Cedar & 42. The intersection will now be closed from Saturday, June 15th at 9PM until Sunday June 16th at 9AM. Please adjust your travel plans accordingly if you're going out in the community this weekend.

Around the Community...

Memorial Day
On May 27th, I attended the Memorial Day Ceremonies in Rosemount and Apple Valley. While the weather forced us inside at both events, the attendance was standing room only and the ceremonies were beautiful. I was happy to see so many in our community come out to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.

SKB Environmental Open House
On May 28th, I attended SKB’s open house to learn more about their expansion plans for their Rosemount site. SKB is a solid waste firm with several locations in Minnesota, with their largest facility located in Rosemount. SKB provides waste processing, recycling, hauling, and environmentally sound waste disposal services.

Adult Basic Education Graduation
On May 28th, I attended ISD 196 Community Education Adult Basic Education Program Graduation Celebration. Over 90 individuals graduated with either with a high school diploma or a GED. It was inspiring to see these folks overcome the obstacles in their liveslives to achieve this accomplishment.

Presidential Awards at Falco Ridge Middle School
It was great watching students get President's Awards at District 196 Falcon Ridge Middle School on May 30th. One of my constituents, Emily Wasilowski, and a couple of her friends received President's Awards for earning an A- or better during middle school.

Cub Scouts
Later that day I visited Cub Scout Pack 295 for their awards picnic.  It was great to see the race track they worked so hard on as well!

MN Children’s Museum Fundraiser
On June 1st, I had the honor of speaking at the MN Children’s Museum’s annual fundraiser. I shared my family’s story of how we benefitted from the “Play for All” Program that provides free or reduced-price memberships for low-income families. To learn more about this program, visit: http://www.mcm.org/museum-membership/membership-types/needs-based-membership/

Coffee Connection
Each year, the Apple Valley, Burnsville, and Savage Chambers of Commerce sponsor an annual Coffee Connection event at the IMAX Theater at the Minnesota Zoo. Our local Apple Valley Dunn Brothers and Costco generously donated coffee and bagels that helped make this event a success.

I had the chance to get a behind-the-scenes tour of the projection booth at the IMAX Theater, one of the largest screens in the state. They also showed the IMAX Movie "Kenya: Animal Kingdom 3D."

AZUL Africa! Event
On June 6th, I attended the Africa! event, sponsored by AZUL. AZUL is a group of young professionals that help to promote and advocate for the Minnesota Zoo through events, seminars, and other enrichment opportunities. You can find more information about their group at www.mnzoo.org/AZUL

Rosemount Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Meeting
I attended Rosemount Beyond the Yellow Ribbon's meeting on June 10th, and heard about their plans for the Ben Kopp Memorial Ride on July 12th and 13th, as well as their plans for the Leprechaun Days Fair July 26th and 27th. For more information on the Ben Kopp Memorial Ride, which honors the lives and sacrifices of our men and women in the military and raises money for veterans organizations, please visit the Facebook event page here. You can also visit http://www.beyondtheyellowribbon.org/rosemount for more information on the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon program.

Breakfast with the Mayor
On Wednesday, I attended the "Breakfast with the Mayor" event with Apple Valley Mayor Mary Hamann-Roland. The event allowed citizens and local business owners to come share concerns with their local officials and talk about issues affecting our community.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

On June 18th I'm looking forward to touring the Thomson Reuters facility in Eagan to learn about the work they do there and see their facilities.

Metro Red Line Launch
On June 22nd I'm planning to attend the launch of the new Metro Red Line. The event begins at the Apple Valley Transit Station located at 15450 Cedar Avenue South. If you'd like more information, please see the event page here.

Levi & Kelly Hoyt Adoption Benefit
I hope you will join me on June 22nd to attend the Levi & Kelly Hoyt Adoption Benefit. Levi & Kelly have a heartbreaking and inspiring story; after tragically losing their first child, they made the decision to adopt a baby from the Duluth Area. The adoption process is expensive, and happened very suddenly, so they're holding this event to help defray some of those costs. Read their incredible story by clicking here. If you're interested in attending, you can find more details about the event on Facebook by clicking here.

Have a great weekend, Go Twins!

Sincerely,

Anna Wills
State Representative, District 57B
