Saint Paul, Minnesota – Today, President Obama announced an accommodation for faith-based agencies with regarding the contraceptive coverage rule. For those organizations with a religious objection to the mandate, insurance companies will be required to offer contraception coverage directly to these employees.
State Representative Erin Murphy, (DFL – St. Paul) offered the following comments:
“I’m happy to see that in this accommodation, President Obama has not wavered in his objective of ensuring that all women have access to affordable contraception.
“For many women, contraception is not just something they use to prevent pregnancy. Many women are prescribed birth control in order to prevent serious—sometimes life threatening—conditions and complications.
“Contraception is not a religious or social issue; it is a matter of women’s health. The rule ensures equitable and affordable access to preventative health services including screening and contraception. The decision to utilize such services remains between a woman and her provider. Under the new rule, cost will no longer be a barrier to important preventative services."
