Rep. Jenifer Loon Supports Parent Choice in Education

Thursday, January 31, 2013

St. Paul – In honor of National School Choice Week, Deputy Minority Leader Jenifer Loon (R-Eden Prairie) introduced two pieces of legislation to support parents’ choice in education. House File 245 allows an individual to claim a tax credit for education related expenses including tuition for elementary or secondary school. House File 246 provides a tax credit for an individual making a contribution to a foundation providing opportunity scholarships to low-income families.

“As parents, we are responsible for preparing our children to be good citizens and successful members of our future workforce. As a legislator, I want to do everything in my ability to give Minnesota families the flexibility and tools they need to realize that goal. Today I introduced two bills to make it easier for parents, from all economic backgrounds, to choose the right school for their child’s needs,” said Deputy Minority Leader Loon. “Educating our kids is a priority for Minnesota and critical to our state’s prosperity. I’m committed to finding solutions to give all Minnesota students the opportunity to succeed in schools of their parents’ choosing.”

Both House File 245 and 246 were introduced Thursday, January 31st and referred to the Education Finance Committee.
