SAINT PAUL—After hearing news that the Governor would immediately call a special legislative session to finish the work of the state, first-term Representatives Melissa Hortman and Denise Dittrich responded, renewing their pledge to work together with all parties and not accept per diem pay during the extra days of session.
A group of freshman legislators authored a bill early on in the session that would eliminate per diem payments to legislators in the event of a special session.
"As a group, we will not be accepting per diem pay," said Representative Larry Hosch (St. Joseph). "We want to reduce the price of Government to Minnesota taxpayers, not add to it."
Rep. Steve Simon (St. Louis Park) said that he and his first-term colleagues heard one message loud and clear during the time leading up to the last election: work together and get the job done.
"We came here to be active participants in changing the tone of state Government," said Simon. "This includes working together on a bipartisan basis and finding compromise."
"We have helped to pass many key pieces of legislation with bipartisan effort—a bonding bill, a minimum wage increase for example—this is in stark contrast of last year; if this continues, we should expect the work to be completed quickly and effectively," said Representatives Hortman and Dittrich.
