January 27, 2011 (SAINT PAUL) — State Representative Karen Clark (DFL — Minneapolis) released the following statement after the passage of HF 130:
“This bill is simply more of the same failed policies of the past, forcing working-class and middle-class Minnesotans to shoulder more and more of the burden. It’s a high-tax, high tuition and high risk proposal that Minnesota can’t afford right now.
“This reckless bill cuts local government aid to cities and counties, forcing cuts in services like police, fire and — of special importance this winter — snow plowing. These LGA cuts will force communities to raise property taxes by over $300 million to try and make up the difference, putting the squeeze on middle-class families already struggling to make ends meet. These same struggling families will then be forced to pay more to send their children to college as a result of the cuts to higher education in this bill.
“Finally, HF 130 includes $200 million in immediate cuts to state agencies, including cuts to our veterans, specifically in tuition reimbursement and reintegration for our National Guard members; millions of dollars in cuts to student grant programs, including American Indian scholarships; and cuts to state services for the blind. Any solutions to our budget deficit should certainly not impact veterans and the most vulnerable among us.
“HF 130 is not the right solution for the people of my district and it’s not the right solution for the people of Minnesota."
