February 9th Legislative Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

First, thank you to the hundreds who attended our precinct caucus meetings earlier this week. Across the state and in District 16A, there was a terrific turnout of new folks for these meetings. I can tell that there is definitely a strong sense of urgency surrounding national and state issues this election year.

I appreciated the ideas that were discussed in the Mille Lacs and Benton County caucuses and was eager to learn from supporters of Rick Santorum, Ron Paul, Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich. This boiling pot of ideas was beneficial because each candidateís supporters brought great ideas to the table. Rick Santorum was the winner in Mille Lacs, Sherburne and Morrison Counties and Ron Paul won in Benton County.

Finally, on a very serious note: Please call Governor Mark Dayton and ask that his administration reverse its decision to release convicted sex offender Clarence Opheim. This man is responsible for roughly 100 separate sex offenses against 30 different victims. One of the victims was as young as eight years old.

Press accounts say that Dayton's appointee, Commissioner of Human Services Lucinda Jesson, failed to object to the release of Opheim. This comes despite the fact that less than one year ago, the state special review board determined that Opheim is "at high risk to commit a future serious sexual offense."

The House Health and Human Services Reform Committee will hold a hearing on this issue on Wednesday, February 15, to discuss how Opheumís fitness for release could have changed so drastically in just one year.

Like you, I believe that releasing a dangerous child sex-predator is not following the laws set down for sex offenders.
