Rep. Haley Legislative Update (7/13)

Friday, July 13, 2018

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

I hope your summer is going well and your Independence Day celebrations were fun and safe!  I’ve enjoyed talking with many of you about what the legislature accomplished this past session as well as what opportunities lie ahead as I’ve scheduled visits with area chambers, school boards, city councils and veterans affairs groups.

This week’s newsletter includes a quick update on a Housing award I received, some community recognition and upcoming events.

Minnesota Housing Partnership Award

In June, I received the Minnesota Housing Partnership’s (MHP) Legislative Leader award for my work advancing affordable housing in the legislature.

In 2017, I chief authored legislation to enable the creation of Local Housing Trust Funds (LHTFs). By sharing the innovative efforts of LHTF pioneers in Red Wing, I was able to help play a role in bringing this flexible, locally-controlled tool to other Minnesota communities. I was also proud to support affordable housing initiatives throughout the 2018 legislative session, as I helped secure $90 million in bonds for housing and joined a broad support coalition for the MN Tax Credit Contribution Fund.

I was honored to be named a Legislative Leader by the Minnesota Housing Partnership. I am thankful for the MHP’s leadership and advocacy on these issues, and I remain as committed as ever to working with my colleagues in the legislature to advance policies to help address housing shortages.

New laws taking effect

Although the governor’s vetoes diminished the number of new laws that were enacted this year, a number of laws that passed during the 2018 session took effect on July 1. Click here for more information on these new laws.

Recognition

The city of Wabasha received the Minnesota Main Street Recognition Award. Congratulations to the steering committee that submitted the application to showcase Wabasha’s commitment to a beautiful downtown and revitalization efforts.

Heather Loeschke, Cannon Falls, was named the Minnesota History Teacher of the Year by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Ms. Loeschke has taught civics, history, and government and politics at Cannon Falls HS for 17 years.  I enjoyed reading about her teaching approach and passion for these subjects.  Congratulations Heather!

Upcoming Events

There are many fun community events and celebrations throughout our district for you and your family to enjoy in the coming weeks:

*Wabasha’s Riverboat Days run July 27-29th

*Red Wing’s River City Days are August 3-5th
