Capitol Update

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol.

Budget Targets

On Thursday, House Republicans released our budget targets, which are given to committee chairs as they craft supplemental bills. These budget adjustments reflect our shared values, focusing on school safety, tax conformity, and transportation infrastructure. In addition, we also make needed investments in mental health for our farmers, efforts to combat the opioid crisis, and care for our disabled community.

Highlights of our plan include:

  • $107 million to simplify our state tax code and provide additional tax relief to hardworking Minnesotans
  • $101 million for fixing roads and bridges
  • $30 million for education, with a focus on student safety and mental health
  • $10 million for health and human services to prevent a 7 percent cut to those who care for Minnesota’s disabled community through the Disability Waiver Rate System
  • -$7 million reduction for state government to find efficiencies

It’s important to remember that state government is fully funded for the next two years, and our focus is Minnesotans’ priorities like school safety and roads and bridges. We are looking at a balanced approach, and focusing on issues that are broadly supported by Minnesota families, taxpayers and citizens.

Peppin’s MinnTriv

Thank you to everyone who participated in the last Peppin’s MinnTriv. The question was: Which Minnesota governor was the first to appear on the cover of Time Magazine? The answer was Governor Wendell Anderson.

Congratulations to Dona Christensen from Maple Grove who is last week’s winner.

With yet another possible snowstorm on the way this weekend, I thought this would be a good MinnTriv question of the week:

The latest recorded snow in Minnesota happened on June 4, 1935, in this town, located in Koochiching County.

The FOURTH correct response will be featured in the next email update.
