New Year, New Laws

Friday, January 12, 2018

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol.

In this Issue:

  • New Laws
  • 2018 Session
  • Minnesota is a Great Place to Raise a Family!
  • Peppin’s MinnTriv

New Laws

When a bill passes the legislature and is signed into law by the governor, it is given an effective date. Effective dates vary, and can begin immediately upon enactment or on a certain date. Many of the bills we passed took effect last year.

However, the start of a new year means a number of new laws took effect on January 1. Some highlights of laws that took effect earlier this month include the establishment of five uniform election dates for local elections, allowing age-related hearing loss training for home care providers, and new license plates to honor law enforcement killed in the line of duty.

You can read more about the new laws that took effect in 2018 here as well as summaries of all laws passed last year here.

2018 Session

The 2018 legislative session is set to begin on February 20 and will run through late May. As we begin to gear up for next session, I invite you to contact me to share your thoughts, concerns and ideas for new legislation. Your input helps me better represent the people and priorities of our district, and I’d love to hear from you!

Please don’t hesitate to contact my office at any time. I can be reached by email at rep.joyce.peppin@house.mn or by phone at 651-296-7806. I am here to serve you!

Minnesota is a Great Place to Raise a Family!

Minnesota is a top state to raise a family according to a recent study done by WalletHub. More than forty indicators of family friendliness were ranked including median salaries, quality of education, crime rates, housing affordability and more. Minnesota ranked #2 just behind Massachusetts.

I think this study proves what Minnesotans already know—our state is a great place to live, work and play!

Peppin’s MinnTriv

Thank you to everyone who participated in the last Peppin’s MinnTriv Question. The question was: Every year the DNR chooses a Christmas tree from one of Minnesota’s 59 State Forests to display at the governor’s mansion. This year, the 30-foot tree on display comes from which forest near Willow River in Pine County? The answer was General C.C. Andrew State Forest.

Congratulations to Mark VanOosbree from Maple Grove for being the last Peppin MinnTriv winner of 2017.

This week’s question has two parts: In what city did the Vikings play their first Super Bowl? In that game, who scored the first Vikings Super Bowl touchdown?

The FIFTH correct response will be featured in the next email update.

Skol Vikings!!
