Happy Thanksgiving from Speaker Daudt

Wednesday, November 22, 2017

Dear Friends,

I wanted to write and wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I hope you're surrounded by good company, delicious food, and can celebrate yet another Vikings victory. I'm so thankful for the opportunity to serve my friends and neighbors at the Minnesota Legislature, and to lead the Republican Majority as we work to improve the lives of families throughout our state.

This season is also a time for us to give back and care for those in need. There are a number of organizations delivering or providing meals, so please consider volunteering your time or making a donation so everyone can enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

Supreme Court Ruling

Last week, the Minnesota Supreme Court handed down their decision in the Legislature's lawsuit against Governor Dayton. As you probably recall, the Governor line-item-vetoed funding for the entire legislature in an attempt to reopen budget negotiations. Our position was simple: when you have an agreement with someone, you stick to it. The governor personally agreed to the final budget agreement, including the items he later objected to.

The governor lost the district court ruling, but had his veto ultimately upheld by the Supreme Court. Unfortunately, the court declined to rule whether the governor's veto was unconstitutionally coercive. This obviously is a deeply disappointing decision by the court that permanently alters the balance of power between the legislature and the governor. Rest assured I will do everything I can as your representative to preserve your voice at the Capitol, despite Governor Dayton's objections.

As we approach the next legislative session, I hope you'll contact me with your questions, comments, and suggestions. You can reach me any time at rep.kurt.daudt@house.mn or call my office at 651-296-5364.

Have a great weekend and a safe and happy Thanksgiving. Safe travels!

Sincerely,

Kurt
