News from Representative Newberger 10-18-2017

Wednesday, October 18, 2017

Hello, Friends!

I wanted to keep you updated on some major things happening in our area and around the state.

Firefighter Meeting

This week, I attended the Lake Region Firefighters Association meeting in New London. Over 100 firefighters from throughout central Minnesota came to the meeting to discuss various issues related to their profession.

One of the main things we heard was a need for better cancer screening and care for these public servants. Fighting fires is dangerous to begin with, but when you add in the cancer-causing toxins these men and women are exposed to, the risks become even greater. I’m working with other legislators to craft bills to ensure increased and earlier access to cancer screening for firefighters.

Upcoming Legislation

I’m also in the process of writing a bill that would help our first responders suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). PTSD is a real problem in this profession, and I hope to work with members from both parties to craft legislation that provides the help first responders need.

Flags at Half-Staff

Today, flags throughout the state will be flown at half-staff to honor paramedic Marina Gayle Desteno Challeen who lost her life last week in a vehicle collision.

Last week's tragedy was heartbreaking for so many in the EMS community. EMS workers and first responders like Marina Gayle Desteno Challeen risk their own lives each day to help save the lives of countless others. Today is a day to honor Marina and her family, and to reflect on all of the good first responders do for our communities and our state.
