Legislative Update (September 29, 2017)

Friday, September 29, 2017

Dear Neighbors,

I’m sure some of you are planning to head out to a local football game or sporting event this evening. The weather looks great, and good luck to our area teams!

Committee Tour

This week, I again joined the House Capital Investment Committee on a tour, this time in northern Minnesota. We had great weather for the outside stops, and got to see some early fall colors coming through. One of the highlights was near Cohasset when we toured the Tioga recreational area and got to hike on some of the trails.

We also got an up-close view of the Split Rock Lighthouse and the Glensheen Mansion; both were amazing stops. It’s important to protect and preserve these statewide, historical assets.

I’ve had some folks ask about these tours. Each year, the legislature receives billions of dollars in requests for bonding projects. As members of the committee, it’s important we get to a number of these sites to see which ones could have the greatest impact on their region. It’s an important process leading up to next session.

Health Care Workgroup

Recently, I was named to the Minnesota Department of Health’s “Strengthening Public Health in MN Workgroup.” Since coming to the legislature, I’ve been fortunate to work on a number of public health issues, including two provisions I authored this year that became law. The first is my dental bill to bring dental care to more Minnesotans. The second provision helps bring qualified mental health practitioners to more patients, including children.

I look forward to working with other legislators, local officials, and health care experts as part of this group. As we meet and discuss important issues, I’ll be sure to keep you updated.
