Shakopee Community Garden

There is something about growing your own food that creates a sense of anticipation and satisfaction. Interest in gardening is increasing and Lisa Brodsky, Scott County's Public Health Director put the word out to get things moving on a community garden for Shakopee. The project, named Backstretch Gardens, would be funded by Scott County's Statewide health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) but help was needed to get the site workable.

I am proud to say that is when our community stepped up and many from, all walks of life, pitched in to make this community garden a reality. First, Canterbury Park contributed the land for the garden. Next, the Scott County Learning Center constructed the raised boxes for the fruits and vegetables. Then the local Knights of Columbus pitched in to do site prep. And finally, the Scott County GOP laid the mulch for the garden.

This year's expansion to the community garden expanded it to include a total of 86 plots available to community members. Currently, Community Action Partnership Agency is utilizing over 40 beds to grow for WIC and food shelf clients. During the month of July, they harvested over 100 pounds of produce to go directly to their clients.

“The gardens are a great way to introduce kids and clients of WIC and the CAP Agency Food Shelf to home-grown fresh fruits and vegetables. It also provides an opportunity for neighbors and fellow gardeners to socially connect and support one another.” said Jamie Bachaus, SHIP Coordinator.

Next year, the hope is to expand the garden again depending on interest of the residents. Canterbury Park tilled up additional space which allowed the expansion this year and left more room for it to be expanded in future years.

Backstretch Gardens is an example of our community at its absolute best. Citizens, government, businesses, and more came together to provide a resource that will help their fellow man, especially those least fortunate. While current events and political rhetoric making it seem like people are more divided and less caring than ever, it's great to be reminded of who we are as Americans and Minnesotans. It makes me proud to represent Shakopee in the Minnesota House of Representatives.
