Legislative Update from Rep. Dario Anselmo

Friday, July 28, 2017

Dear Neighbor,

Here is an update with the latest news from the Capitol.

New Laws August 1st

While many of the funding bills that passed this year took effect on July 1, more policy-related laws take effect next week on August 1.

Highlights include a new law that will give insurance companies the ability to limit life insurance payouts to beneficiaries of those suspected of terrorism. Another, will allow co-owners of vehicles seized under civil forfeiture to petition the court to have their car returned to them. Health and Human Services will begin work on developing a comprehensive, statewide plan to help combat the spread of HIV/AIDs, and penalties will also be increased for those impersonating military or a police officer.

You can learn more about these and other new laws taking effect on August 1 by checking out this press release put together by House Public Information Services.

Attend the Capitol Grand Opening Celebration August 11-13!

On August 11-13, the Minnesota State Capitol Grand Opening Celebration is taking place in St. Paul to celebrate the completion of a four year restoration and renovation of the People’s House. The Capitol Grand Opening Celebration is a full weekend of fun events, and there will be things to see and do for Minnesotans of all ages. Events over the weekend include a ribbon cutting, tours, hotdish panels, live performances, a kid zone, fireworks, an ice cream social, a craft beer garden, and much more.

The Capitol belongs to the people, and I encourage Edina residents to head to St. Paul and see the beautiful Capitol building restorations for themselves! Full information on the schedule, ticketed events, transportation and Capitol renovations can be found at mn.gov/admin/capitol-grand-opening

Around the Community

While it may be summertime, it doesn’t mean it’s not busy in Edina! This week, I took part in the Senate District 49 Town Hall, and also attended the Dan Patch Rail Line community meeting. Earlier this month, I also attended the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District meeting on making improvements to the creek, habitat and fishing in Arden Park. It’s great to see constituents from around the community at these meetings and hear their input about important local issues!

Thank you to everyone who came to the Senate District 49 Town Hall on Tuesday! Your input and questions were invaluable and help me better represent the priorities of our community at the Capitol.

I welcome you to contact my office at any time to share your thoughts, concerns and ideas about what you would like to see happen at the Capitol. It is an honor and privilege to serve as your voice at the Capitol.

Sincerely,

Dario
