Minnesota House Approves $21.7 Million in Tax Relief

Thursday, January 5, 2017

Federal Conformity Provides Tax Relief to Teachers, Families and Homeowners

Saint Paul, MINN— On Thursday, January 5, 2017, the Minnesota House of Representatives unanimously passed House File 2, legislation which will result in $21.7 million in tax relief for 220,000 Minnesotans. The legislation conforms Minnesota’s tax code to the federal code.

Representative Dario Anselmo, R-Edina, supported the legislation saying, “We hit the ground running this week, declaring an urgency to pass federal conformity and provide meaningful tax relief for higher education, homeowners, teachers and families saving for college. This needed to be done quickly to avoid complications for Minnesotans who file their taxes early, and I expect this to be the start of more substantial tax relief legislation passed by the legislature later this session.”

Without quick approval of House File 2, Minnesotans who file their taxes early could face higher tax bills, a situation lawmakers wanted to avoid. In order to avoid filing complications, the Department of Revenue stated the proposal needs to be signed into law before January 11th. The Senate is expected to pass tax conformity in time to meet that deadline.
