ST. PAUL – State Representative Carlos Mariani, District 65B, introduced a bill (HF 771) calling for comprehensive immigrant reform in Minnesota.
"We are calling on Congress to implement reforms that will benefit immigrant children by giving them greater opportunities to expand work visas and increase our work force by developing existing human resources currently living in Minnesota," said Mariani, Chair of the House E-12 Education Policy Committee.
A press conference on comprehensive immigrant reform was held on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 on the steps of the State Capitol, from 10:30-11:15a.m. Representative Mariani spoke to a rally of 700 supporters from the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce, the Catholic Archdiocese of St. Paul, Immigrant Freedom Network and AFFIRM, a coalition of 40 organizations.
"This is not about special privilege – we live in an era of global competition – if Minnesota wants to be a contender we need to develop a work force that includes all our human resources. After all, we determine the kind of world we live in," said Mariani.
"There's a clear majority in our nation that has both sides of the aisle agreeing we need to embrace more inclusive policies to ensure a viable, competitive and growing work force that will secure the future well-being of all Minnesotans. All that's needed now is the political courage and foresight to ensure opportunities are available for all in our society to reach their potential."
