Dear Neighbor,
I want to thank everyone for the confidence you’ve placed in me as I prepare to serve another two-year term in the Minnesota House of Representatives. This is a tremendous honor, and we have a great deal of work ahead of us when we convene in January to ensure our schools remain top-quality, health care is affordable and accessible to all, and everyone can live in safe, healthy communities. I’m hopeful that by working with our new Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan, as well as with the State Senate (still with a one-seat Republican-majority), our results will reflect our shared vision for “One Minnesota.”
This past weekend, I was invited by Sen. Foung Hawj to kick off the Hmong American New Year celebration. Best wishes to all in the New Year!
High School Page Program
The Minnesota House High School Page Program is currently accepting applicants for the 2019 legislative session. The program, available to high school juniors, is a unique educational opportunity for students to learn about state government first-hand. During their week at the Capitol, students will participate in activities such as: assisting legislators during House Floor sessions; meeting with individual legislators, constitutional officers, staffers, lobbyists, members of the media and others; and conducting a mock committee hearing to develop leadership skills and critical thinking about issues.
The deadline to apply is November 28, and applications require a short essay and letter of recommendation. This is truly a one-of-a-kind opportunity, and I hope to see local students at the Capitol participating, so please share this information with any high school juniors you think may be interested. House of Representatives Hiring
With the DFL regaining the majority in the Minnesota House, there are many job openings starting in January at the Capitol. We will be looking to hire legislative assistants, committee administrators, researchers, communications and constituent services specialists, IT staff and more. Join the Walz-Flanagan Team
Late last week, the Walz-Flanagan transition office opened, and they are looking for dedicated Minnesotans to join their team to hit the ground running after the inauguration in January. With less than two months to go, this is a massive undertaking to fill roles not just in the Governor’s office, but leadership roles within a variety of state agencies as well. The transition committee, led by Lt. Gov.-elect Flanagan, is committed to hiring a talented, diverse group truly reflective of our state’s population. Parking spots for people with disabilities
The Star Tribune had an interesting story yesterday regarding the use of parking spaces for people with disabilities. These parking spaces are often very limited, so it’s important to do the right thing and keep them available for those who truly rely on them.
