Assistant Majority Leader Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park) announced today that a proposal to create a prairie reserve on land next to Riverview Elementary School took a key step forward when it was included in the House bonding bill earlier this week. Hortman said she was thrilled to see the proposal make the cut.
"We worked very hard to see this project included in the bonding bill," she said. "We still, however, have a long road ahead of us and I plan to continue my hard work on this issue until the Governor signs the bill into law."
The Riverview bonding bill provision, which was authored by Hortman, would allocate $300,000 to Anoka Hennepin School District 11 to buy the two-acre site. After the land is purchased, the students at Riverview would study plants and animals that are native to Minnesota prairies and help decide which plants to put in the reserve. They then would assist in the creation and upkeep of the reserve. Hortman said the project is an amazing educational opportunity.
"These children will be able to develop important skills while learning how important it is to give back to the community and respect nature," she said.
