Legislative Update - June 8, 2018

Friday, June 8, 2018

Dear Neighbors,

One in six children in Minnesota doesn't know if they will have enough food to eat, and that's why I am continuing my work to end child hunger. The good news is that child hunger is Minnesota's most solvable problem. This week I joined Hunger Solutions at their Rising Tides event to celebrate Minnesota’s progress towards ending child hunger and ensuring food security for all Minnesotans.

MPR reported on the summer food programs that fill the gap for students that rely on school meals to get enough to eat.  Click here to read the full story. No Kid Hungry, a national organization that promises to work until no kid is hungry, highlighted one family’s struggles getting enough food and showed why summer is the hungriest time of the year for many kids. Hunger doesn’t just affect children. A TPT series, Feed the Gap, examines food insecurity for kids, college students, adults, and seniors. By 2025 half of senior citizens will be food insecure.

Minnesota does have excellent resources for any child, adult, senior, or family that doesn’t know if they will have enough to eat at their next meal. To find a list of locations visit www.summereats.org, download the free mobile app by searching “summer eats Minnesota” in the app store, or texting “Summer Meals” to 97779 (have your address ready). You can also enter your address on the USDA’s Summer Meals webpage to find summer meals in your local community.

Hunger can no longer be a silent issue in Minnesota. It is why I founded the bipartisan Child Hunger Caucus and it is why I entered public service. I look forward to working with you to end food insecurity for all Minnesotans.

Warmly,

Erin
