RELEASE: Rep. Considine statement on projected state budget deficit

Tuesday, December 5, 2017

ST. PAUL – Today, Minnesota Management and Budget announced the November Economic Forecast, which projects a budget shortfall of $188 million for the current two-year cycle. This deficit is projected to grow to $586 million for the 2020-2021 budget cycle.

Rep. Jack Considine (DFL – Mankato) released the following statement:

“Shortly after taking office, Governor Dayton fixed a massive deficit, paid back schools from funding shifts, and got the state on sound financial footing. Now just three years into their majority, the House Republicans already have sent us into a deficit, potentially one as large as a half billion dollars as soon as 19 months from now.

“As Minnesotans, we need to decide if we will have a soul to invest in people, or prioritize excessive tax cuts for greedy corporations as the model for how we want to run this state. This is a decision which every Minnesotan needs to face: what do we value and what services should our state provide? For my part, every time I will side with making sure our children have a solid education and food to eat, Minnesotans have quality health care, and people with disabilities will have services to ensure they live full, productive lives.”
