STATEMENT: Rep. Becker-Finn response to Sen. Dan Schoen sexual harassment allegations
Saint Paul, MN. – Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn released the following statement in response to MinnPost’s reporting of alleged sexual harassment and assault committed by Senator Dan Schoen:
“For years, the burden has been on women to live with and manage this type of behavior by men like Sen. Schoen. The ‘whisper network’ of avoiding certain men exists in many workplaces and it is time for the burden of addressing this problem to be shared by everyone.
“Sen. Schoen is not the only person in the Minnesota Legislature to act inappropriately towards women. My hope is that as the truth comes to light, others will feel empowered to step forward so we can meaningfully work towards true change at our State Capitol. It is everyone’s responsibility to call out this behavior, regardless of political party or status.
“When Lindsey Port and Rep. Erin Maye Quade told me they were ready to tell their stories publicly, there was no question that I would stand with them and speak to what I know about the culture in Minnesota politics and what I know about the pattern of Sen. Schoen’s behavior. I commend Lindsey and Erin for their courage.
“In my job as a prosecutor, it has been my privilege to work with crime victims and their advocates. Their stories and experiences have impacted me deeply. It is important that we believe and support those who are victimized, and recognize that women are disproportionately impacted by sexual harassment and violence.
“I join Senate Leadership and others in calling for Sen. Schoen’s resignation. Ultimately, Sen. Schoen is the one responsible for his actions. I will continue to support Lindsey, Erin and all others who have been negatively affected by sexual harassment and violence.”
Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn, a DFLer, serves all or part of Roseville, Vadnais Heights, Gem Lake, Shoreview and Little Canada in the Minnesota House. She is a member of the House Public Safety Policy and Finance Committee.
