Rep. Erin Murphy Statement on New Budget Forecast

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

St. Paul, Minn. – Following Minnesota Management & Budget’s release of new budget forecast figures showing a $1.65 billion surplus, Rep. Erin Murphy (DFL-St. Paul) released the following statement:

“With uncertainty at the federal level around funding, now is not the time to step back from the investments and progress we've made in recent years in Minnesota. Our state budget continues to see a surplus, giving policymakers the space to address immediate challenges, while building the opportunities of our future.

“Our finances are in excellent shape, in large part because we pursued priorities that many Minnesotans share. The forecasted surplus allows us to continue those investments, like expanding our support for PreK, K12 and higher education, providing access to affordable health care, and driving the growth of innovation to fuel the future of our state's economy. As the legislature shifts attention to passing a budget, these priorities must continue to be our focus. Minnesota families and businesses are deeply impacted by the decisions we make here. So as we move forward, let’s commit ourselves to making their success our top priority."
