Legislative Update - December 7, 2016

Wednesday, December 7, 2016

Greetings!

Representing our community, the mighty 64A, continues to be one of my greatest honors. I look forward to getting to work on the issues that matter to our community: education, good paying jobs, transit improvements, and ensuring vital services are available for all. Together, we can work to ensure every Minnesotan has a shot at the good life.
Possible Special Session

A lot has been happening around the state since the election. Most notably, renewed discussions of a special session. The chief focus of a December special session would be providing relief to Minnesotans purchasing health care on the individual market. As discussions have restarted, so have calls for passing a bonding bill and a tax bill.

With healthcare premiums increasing for the upcoming year, immediate action needs to be taken in order to provide relief to Minnesotans. I continue to work with my colleagues leading on healthcare to ensure we find a solution for the short-term. However, the long-term instability of our healthcare system must be addressed. We cannot continue to leave families scrambling to find quality, affordable coverage.

While there is general consensus on addressing health care premiums, passing a bonding and tax bill in a special session will likely be a more difficult task. Positions are being renegotiated, and bonding projects may need to be reassessed. If we do have a special session, the details must be agreed to by December 16th so we can have a special session by December 20th.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me with your thoughts or concerns.

Mighty Together,

Erin
