News from Representative Wills 10-02-2015

Friday, October 2, 2015
Dear Friends,

The big news this week was the release of premium rates for insurance plans beginning in 2016. This impacts those who purchase insurance on MNsure, the state's health insurance exchange, as well as those who purchase insurance on the individual market. The Commerce Department announced that rates will rise between 14-49%, with most consumers seeing increases of 30% or higher.

This is unfortunate news for families who are already in a budget crunch dealing with the high cost of health care. It's going to take action on the state and federal level to get health costs under control and put a stop to the rising costs families are seeing under the Affordable Care Act. For instance, Commissioner Rothman suggested pooling the small business market with the individual market which could help bolster financial stability for those plans.

I supported legislation last session that was signed into law by the Governor requiring Minnesota to seek a federal waiver to allow for access to tax credits outside of MNsure. Those who are eligible for financial assistance need as many options as possible so they can find plans that are affordable and work well for their family. Limiting their options to only the plans on MNsure makes little sense and restricts competition and choice.

This will continue to be a major issue at the legislature, and I will keep you updated on our efforts to reform this broken system.

Session Wrap Up
I wanted to pass along a link to my 2015 session wrap up. If you're looking for a one page summary of some of the issues I worked on, and what the legislature accomplished this past year, I hope you'll take a look and read it over! Click here to read a PDF version online

Journey Dedication
I greatly enjoyed attending the dedication of "Journey" at the Rosemount Library this past Sunday. This piece is made of 9,216 tiles signed by individuals in the Rosemount Area. Thanks to everyone who came out to support the Rosemount Area Arts Council and see the dedication of this beautiful work!
