Legislative Update

Legislative Update from Rep. Anna Wills

Friends,

School is out and summer is just around the corner as it will officially begin on June 21st! This week's update has a number of fun events in our community you can attend with your whole family.

2017-2018 Legislative Review

This year's legislative Session wrapped up one of the most productive bienniums in recent memory. I am proud of what we accomplished and you can see highlights from the 2017-2018 biennium here or by clicking the image below.

Reminder: Teaching Licensing Rules

The Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) is in the process of developing rules as a result of the reforms passed by the legislature to change the way we license teachers in the state of Minnesota. These reforms were done to help address teacher shortages across the state, as well as correct the subjective and inconsistent licensing process that out-of-state teachers had to go through to get licensed here in Minnesota.

There was a hearing on the proposed rules on June 8th, but the comment period was extended and will close on June 28th at 4:30pm. I personally submitted comments and I wanted to share this link with you in case any of you are interested in submitting your own comments, or in case you know anyone who would be interested in submitting comments.

ICYMI: Suicide Prevention Hotline

Minnesota's statewide mental health hotline, known as Crisis Connections, will not be able to receive calls past June 30th due to the funding being vetoed by Governor Dayton. As an alternative, Minnesotans can call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255), Minnesota metro hotline (**274747) (soon statewide), or text MN to 741741.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but, if you or someone you know needs help, please don't hesitate to reach out to this important Lifeline.

IN THE COMMUNITY:

Beastly Bash at the Minnesota Zoo

Last Saturday, June 9th, was the Minnesota Zoo's 30th Annual Beastly Bash. As a strong supporter of the Zoo, I was proud to attend and personally support this great fundraising event to raise money to help the Zoo be more accessible to ALL Minnesotans. I am continually impressed by all the wonderful things the Zoo does for education and conservation - both in our community and around the world.

Dakota County Regional Chamber Luncheon

On Monday, June 11th, I attended the Dakota County Regional Chamber Good Day Dakota County Luncheon. I enjoyed informative presentations by retiring DCTC President Tim Wynes and retiring District 196 Superintendent Jane Berenz on the state of the schools. Best wishes to you both in your retirement!
