New Laws Take Effect

Several new laws take effect this week, including legislation that will benefit tens of thousands of workers. Starting on Saturday, January 1, employers with 15 or more employees will be required to provide reasonable accommodations to workers who are pregnant or new parents. Under this new law, which passed with bipartisan support, pregnant Minnesotans can request limits to heavy lifting and more frequent breaks to eat, drink, or use the restroom. People who’ve recently given birth can receive paid breaks to pump breast milk. This will help keep people in the workforce, and it’s good for the health of the child and their parents!

Another notable new law will make it easier for Indigenous Minnesotans to access state parks and improve relationships between tribal governments and state agencies. It makes all members of the 11 federally recognized tribes in Minnesota eligible for free annual park permits.

You can read more about these laws and other legislation that takes effect tomorrow here.

If you have questions or feedback you’d like to share, please don’t hesitate to reach out. You can contact me by email at rep.liz.reyer@house.mn or call (651) 296-4128.

I wish you all a happy new year and look forward to working with you in 2022!

Sincerely,

Liz Reyer
