Rep. Boldon Statement on January 6th Insurrection

Thursday, January 6, 2022

St. Paul, MN – Today marks the first anniversary of the 2021 January 6th insurrection - after an election that saw Minnesotans and Americans turnout in record numbers, we witnessed a deadly attack on our nation’s capital by right-wing extremists, fueled by disinformation and white supremacy, with the goal of overturning the election results and the will of the people. Now, that same faction continues to spread deliberate lies about our elections and our government, exposing Americans from election administrators to school superintendents to death threats and violence.

To acknowledge the anniversary of this tragic event and the ongoing struggle to secure our democratic values, Rep. Liz Boldon (DFL - Rochester) released the following statement:

“The disinformation and lies perpetrated by some Republican leaders have had a grave impact on the state of our democracy, rule of law, and tradition of a peaceful transition of power. The events of January 6th were tragic and it’s important to note that the danger didn’t end there - our democracy remains in peril. Over the last year, Republican lawmakers in nearly every state - including Minnesota -  have conspired to restrict the freedom to vote and make it easier to sabotage future elections by introducing legislation designed to silence the voice of voters, especially voters who are people of color, young people or new Americans.

“The urgency of this moment is clear. I am committed to protecting Minnesota voters and our proud tradition of voter participation and trusted local elections against future violence or sabotage. We must all come together to acknowledge the verifiable events of the past year so that we may move forward as one nation. I will continue to do everything in my power to ensure everyone has the freedom to vote and work towards realizing the promise of a truly representative democracy for us all.”
